It was built between 1864 & 1875 by Nathaniel Gillett, a local business investor and gentleman farmer, who bread horses, grew hops, and raised vineyards there. In 1900, it was purchased by a New York City native who became a prominent Syracuse attorney, Andrew S. White, whose uncle was first president of Cornell University. The White's maintained a Ritz Carlton residence in Paris and a private residence condo at The Plaza Hotel in New York City. He and his wife, Claire Alcee, a concert signer, filled the house with treasures, art, statues, and hunting trophies. Whites library was personally designed by Gustav Stickley and Theodore Roosevelt was close friends with Andrew White and a frequent guest in the house. The estate is located in Manlius, adjacent to Lyndon Golf Course and across the street from Onondaga Country Club.
